Lawmakers Complain Of 'Shocking' Videos
Young people post movies containing all sorts of nonsense onto YouTube. One of the latest floods of new releases contain videos of people smoking Salvia and ‘tripping’. Anyone wanting to buy Salvia and use it for its hallucinogenic properties is free to do so under federal law. So why all the fuss about these videos? If I want to buy Salvia then why can’t I do it in peace.
The fuss is caused by the same groups of people who have helped to perpetuate the Salvia phenomenon in the first place: politicians, lawmakers and those in the media. The media have found a good story, something they can safely criticize without loosing any readers, listeners or watchers: Salvia is a common enemy. Politicians have found something that they can rally against and win voters in doing so. The fact that I can go and buy Salvia legally on the high street or online doesn’t seem to matter. Soon you won’t be able to buy Salvia legally anywhere in the US.
Salvia is not a dangerous drug, and it is most definitely the case that many of the videos on YouTube contain activities that are vastly more dangerous than tripping on Salvia. If you want to do it, then go and buy Salvia. It’s up to you, not the government.
