Apple’s recent announcement of the beta release of their apps for iPhone SDK has gone down a storm with owners and developers alike. So popular was the news that over 100,000 lucky people flocked to Apple’s site to iPhone download the SDK. Another 1,000,000 sneaked a look at Apple’s video of the announcement event. Impressive numbers. So impressive that Apple’s servers start to complain and churn out happy 404 errors (incidentally there are torrents of the iPhone SDK available if you’re having trouble getting to the site). This is what 210 terabytes of data does to your servers, if you’re interested!
So the fans were excited. What about those in the industry? Yes, they were excited too. Very excited. Six Apart’s CEO admitted that it’s already using the iPhone SDK and developing a “native iPhone application for TypePad”; game producers PopCap and Namco have announced ports to the platform of their most popular games. We’ve no doubt that simple, playable games will be very popular on iphone – and probably easily knocked together using the new iPhone SDK – but don’t expect GT5 or GTA to start appearing (though I’m willing to eat my words!). Exciting times.
