Ares Lite an unnecessary compromise

Filed under: General — Laura @ 11:28 pm

Sometimes you’ve got to accept a compromise. This is exactly what Ares Lite is: a compromise.

Ares Lite is a version of Ares Galaxy that has been on super-diet. It has been slimmed down cutting off those extra bits that, while useful, were not essential to the program’s operation. The ‘Lite’ part of the Ares Lite title stems from the fact that the software is, ahem, lighter (right, I’ll stop with the diet analogies).

When filesharing and Ares first became popular it was soon clear that entrepreneurs were bundling adware and spyware in with the Ares program and distributing it to users. This is the model used by distributions such as Ares Destiny which comes with the very dubious bonus of Dealio. A common misconception among novice users was that Ares Lite was ‘Lite’ because it was the only version of Ares that didn’t contain any spyware.

Of course this was not the case and there are many excellent versions of the popular Ares filesharing application that are not packaged with malware like this. Getting Ares Lite is no longer essential even for users with older computers, and the benefits of the usage of less resources is outweighed by the lack of full features in the application. Downloads like Ares Ultimate, Ares Ultra and Ares Vista, along with the old favorite Ares Galaxy, are all more than capable of taking over the Ares Lite crown.
