Legal Status of Salvia in Danger
The strongest naturally available hallucinogenic – Salvia Divinorum – may soon be outlawed if lawmakers in California are any measure of the country’s attitude. Anthony Adams‘ bill making the sale of Salvia to minors illegal may be the beginning of the end for the drug which currently enjoys legal status in most of the United States and the rest of the world.
Salvia’s opponents are circling like vultures around a freshly killed carcass.
The legal status of Salvia might be due to the drug’s relatively short period of effect. It might also be due to the fact that the effects are quite mild if the leaf itself is smoked or chewed. However the drug is much more commonly used in a concentrated form that has far stronger hallucinogenic effects, such as out-of-body experiences.
This concentrated Salvia is the substance that lawmakers and doctors are warning against: the risks posed by loss of control, they say, outweigh any other considerations when trying to legislate.
